Zephaniah WilliamsConviction: Dec 10 1839 - Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales
Zephaniah Williams was a Welsh Chartist leader and self-taught geologist, one of three commanders of the Newport Rising of 1839, the last armed insurrection on British soil. He helped lead thousands of workers in a march on Newport demanding democratic rights, was convicted of high treason and initially sentenced to death before being transported for life to Tasmania. Remarkably, he discovered coal on the island, built a considerable fortune in exile, and died a free man in Launceston in 1874.
