Karel Englisch (later known as Karel Engliš) was born in 1880 in Hrabyně. Growing up in the Opava district, he rose to become a titan of Czech academia and politics, serving as the first Rector of Masaryk University and later the Rector of Charles University in Prague. As a brilliant economist and the founder of the "Teleological School" of economics, he served multiple terms as the Minister of Finance for Czechoslovakia during the 1920s and 1930s, and also led the National Bank as its Governor. He had a major influence on the nation's financial stability and remained deeply connected to his birthplace, eventually returning to Hrabyně where he spent his final years.
